The advent of the Primary Strategy has provided the opportunity for the whole school to take a fresh look at the curriculum and the way it is organised.

The experienced staff at Glen Hills has ensured that the traditional standards are maintained while looking to educate the children for their future in the 3rd Millenium.

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum which covers not only the core subjects of Maths, English, ICT, Science and RE, but also the foundation subjects of History, Geography, Art, Deign Technology, Music and PE. We also place a great emphasis on the area of Personal and Social Education, in the wider context of citizenship.

The level of work in every case is carefully matched to the needs of each individual child. In addition, if we feel that a child has special educational needs (including exceptionally able and less able children), then we call on resources both within the school and those provided by the educational authority.

Maths

Maths is taught throughout the school using the Framework for the National Numeracy Strategy. This ensures that there is both continuity and progression, not only within the school, but nationally. The materials and textbooks have been carefully selected to ensure the effective delivery of the National Curriculum.

English

English is similarly taught using the Framework for the National Literacy Strategy. This is based on a structured teaching of phonics tied into the imaginative use of 'real books'. Whole class reading using groups readers and 'Big Books' as well as teaching of grammar is an essential part of this new approach. This approach is closely tied into developing children's writing skills that go right from 4+ up to Year 5.

ICT

The importance of Information and Communications Technology cannot be underestimated. In the new millenium ICT skills will be vital to everyone. Teaching children to use computers as a tool and as a resource via the Internet is essential in this day and age. Not only do all classes have at least two computers, but they also have regular access to the 25 station computer suite. We have carefully screened access to the Internet for both children and Staff.

Science

Science is taught in accordance with the National Curriculum following a Year Plan worked out for each year group, and in liason with the South Wigston Family of Schools. This ensures continuity of teaching throughout the famil and provides a good basic scientific knowledge for all children.

Geography and History

Similarly, although the time available for the foundation subjects has been reduced, Geography and History have been planned for the year following consultations with colleagues both within the school and at High School, and the National Curriculum Documents. This ensures common skills being taught right across the family of schools.
