All about this 'Outstanding' School!

Glen Hills School is a Community 4+ / 10+ co-educational, non-denominal primary school in Glen Parva, serving an area of mixed private and council developments on the South Western boundary of the the City of Leicester. Although in the county of Leicestershire, the school catchment area covers the Gilmorton Ward of the City of Leicester

Until 2001, the school was on two sites with the Junior Department on Cork Lane and the Infant Department and 4+ Unit on Featherby Drive. In Autumn 2001 the £1 million Junior Department was completed on the Featherby Drive Site.

This meant that for the first time, Glen Hills School was all on one site and in modern, purpose build buildings.

At the age of 10 (year 5), the children normally transfer to South Wigston High School. At the age of 14 parents can send their children to Countesthorpe Colledge, Guthlaxton College or any other secondary school of their choice.

4+ parents are asked to remain with their children until they are handed over to the Unit staff at 9:00am.

There are approximately 410 children in school, these are split into 73 children in the 4+ Unit. Key Stage One consists of 72 children in Year 1 and 71children in Year 2. These are split into six single year classes (three Year 1 and threeYear 2).

In the Junior Department there are 66 children in two Year 3 classes, 69 children in two Year 4 classes and 60 children in two Year 5 classes.

All classes are mixed ability, as our basic aim is to teach each child as an individual. Teaching therefore is done individually, in small groups or on a class basis depending upon the subject taught and the individual needs of the child. However, in the Junior year groups 3, 4 and 5 and the Infant Year 2 group, the children are taught in ability sets for maths.

The reception and infant departments are open plan, while the junior department is semi open plan. Staff in all departments work very closely together to ensure that children of the same agewill have similar experiences and opportunities as laid down in the National curriculum.

Due to the school having two specialist Special Needs Teachers, we are able to give children with defined reading problems a great deal of support. In addition, the school makes full use of the County and other agencies for those children who have Special Educational Needs.

The school fully supports the county policies on Equal Opportunities and Anti-Racism, which can be summed up in the phrase "Respect for self, respect for others".

The governors are staff also fully support the Leicestershire County Council stance on disability Discrimination.

The opening of the junior department area in 2001 and the recent modifications to the existing buiding mean that the school is now fully accessible for children with mobility problems.
